Barcelona Energy Community
A pilot for Barcelona City Council, recording the consumption, production and storage of municipal buildings on a blockchain.
In December 2018 PROSUME won a grant from Barcelona City Council (Ajuntament de Barcelona) to build a pilot for the city's own buildings.
Spain's Royal Decree 244/2019 had just opened the door to real energy exchange inside communities. So the pilot simulated that exchange between city buildings, to show that a local energy market could work.
What we built
- Blockchain tools for a community of prosumers, deployed and validated on site.
- Power plants, storage and consumption sites connected in one system.
- Peer-to-peer exchange of electricity on a distributed micro-grid, plus the tools to manage it.
- Integration with the tools the city built in the EU-funded DECODE project, whose steering committee set part of the requirements.
Key points
About 10 blockchain light nodes went into the buildings, next to the nodes hosted in the cloud. Validation ran from September to December 2019.
